2022 BOMB BREWERY BLITZ ... PHILLY

11/5/2022

Well we did it! Two brewery bus tours in the same year. Those who joined on the trip were given the opportunity to visit some of Philly's best craft breweries all in one day.
Our first stop was the new Imperial Yeast facility in Northeast Philly.
Macro Marquez gave us tour of Imperial Yeast and the new operations. Macro explained all of the different strains cultured at this location and that it serves breweries east of the Mississippi River.
Our next stop was the Human Robot Brewery. This brewery offered a good variety of traditional beer styles. The Czech pilsner and the Irish dry stout were very tasty, and yes...we had to try the Milktube shooters. The gang had a choice of several other facilities in the area to visit. In addition to Human Robot, other facilities at this stop included:
  • Original 13 Ciderworks
  • Fermentery Form
  • Stateside Vodka
  • Punch Buggy Brewery
Our second stop was a short trip to the new Other Half Brewery. The original brewery is based in Brooklyn NY, but they've recently expanded operations to Philly and other locations. There was a wide selection of mainly NEIPA style beers. It was interesting to taste how much hops can vary the flavor in a single style.
The final stop was at the Triple Bottom Brewery. From here, the gang spread out in all directions, as there was a number of great stops to visit in short walking distance. Destinations in this location included:
  • Liquid Art Barrel House
  • Love City Brewery
  • Prohibition Taproom
  • Yards Brewing Company
The event was +7 hours of nonstop craft beer sampling and club member camaraderie. All who attended had a great time, and as always...we discussed possibilities for the next trip.

The generous people at Kennett Collaborative invited the BOMB to pour member brewed beers and share brewing knowledge at the 2022 Kennett Brewfest in beautiful Kennett Square, PA.
Hurricane Ian didn't stop festival goers, +80 breweries or the BOMB from showing up and having a great time. The weather was wet but the brews were wetter and this was one of most successful showings for our club.

At noon, we were greeted by waves of VIP attendees eager to get first dibs on special brews being offered by brewers. Attendees sipping select libations had a chance to mingle with both commercial and BOMB brewers, discussing the finer nuances of the creation process.

At 1:30p, the vibe changed a bit as the gate opened for general admission attendees to gain access to the festival grounds. They had been standing in long lines wrapped around the festival grounds, peering through the fences at what the VIPs were enjoying for the last hour and a half...and they were ready to take the festival to the next level. And we were ready...

This year, we brought 7 member brewed beers to pour, and we were glad we did. Craft beer lovers stood in line to sample a taste of BOMB brewing talents...
...and many returned throughout the day to taste the entire line up. Brewers and beers for this year's brewfest included...

The BOMB left a mark on attendees and turned heads not only at our awesome "Always Sunny in Philadelphia" themed booth on Club Night, but at the Lallemand booth with beer brewed by our members.

Ship bottom blendery...ahoy!

6/17/2022

Picture
The BOMB crew sailed into the heart of Swarthmore, PA on Thursday night. The small college town was buzzing with activity and people dining outdoors in the warm summer evening air. We all gathered in the main taproom of the Ship Bottom Blendery & Barrel House, eager to fine out more about just "what is a blendery?"

We were warmly greeted by Hannah Gohde, the master blender and a brewer for Ship Bottom Brewery. With cold beer in hand, we were led into the barrel house cellar to learn the answer to our question and more.
Hannah explained the purpose of the "blendery" was to combine or blend beers being fermented and conditioned at the barrel house to produce a new, unique beer. The wort is brewed at Ship Bottom's Beach Haven, NJ brewery and then kegged and transported to the barrel house for fermentation, conditioning and to be magically transformed into something unique.

She explained an unintentional consequence of producing a unique beer is that it may be difficult to reproduce, due to all of the elements of the process, are  unique to this time and place.
Hannah calls her fermenting vessels of beer "barrel babies". She feeds them a diet of adjuncts such as chamomile, lavender, lemon grass and even kumquats from a locally sourced grower in NJ. Each barrel's progress is carefully monitored for flavor development. Once the fermentation and conditioning is complete, Hannah confides, the real magic begins.
Through sampling and tasting the barrel's contents, she gets a flavor profile for each beer and builds a flavor palette. With a vision for the finished beer, she then paints with beer by combining and blending the barrels until she arrives at the flavor she envisioned...pretty cool, eh?
